- LaTeX reads and processes the file "filename.tex" just as if it was present in the document 
- can go before or after \begin{document} (depends on the contents of the file)
- does not cause LaTeX to start on a new page
- appropriate for small files
- it cannot contain these commands: \documentstyle, \begin{document}, \end{document}
